When does ductwork need replacing instead of cleaning?

Clean what can be cleaned. Replace what cannot. Galvanized trunk-and-branch from the 1950s through 1970s usually survives; the metal outlasts the house. What fails is everything attached to it. Cloth-and-mastic tape at the joints turns brittle. Takeoffs pull loose. Old gravity-furnace octopus conversions often carry undersized branches that no cleaning will fix.
